2-Steps For Keeping Your Old Double-Pane Windows From Fogging Up

If you have noticed that your double-pane windows are constantly fogging up, you may wonder if there is anything you can do to reduce the amount of condensation between the two panes of glass. If so, use the following two steps to help keep your old double-pane windows from fogging up:

Step 1:  Drill A Small Hole In Each Pane

This first step involves drilling a small hole in each of the panes of the problem window. The small holes give the moist air a way to escape, keeping the amount of condensation on the inside of the glass to a minimum.

Before drilling the holes, select an area at the top of each pane where they will not be noticeable. You can drill the holes in one of the corners, so long as they parallel each other. Once you have selected your area, place a small piece of tape on the glass to absorb some of the vibrations from the drill.

Using the smallest drill bit you have, apply gentle pressure as you slowly drill the holes. Do not try to force the drill bit through the glass, as this could shatter the panes.

Once you have drilled the holes, remove the tape, and clean off the adhesive with alcohol. Then, go on to the next step.

Step 2:  Caulk The Outer Edges Of The Panes

Now that you have given the moist air an escape route, the next step involves keeping as much of the moisture out as possible. This is done by caulking the outer edges of the glass panes with silicone caulk to seal up any small gaps or holes in the glazing.

Using a caulking gun, apply the silicone along the edges of the panes where they attach to the frame. Then, use your fingertip to gently push the caulk into the crease, running your finger along the edges to smooth the surface.

After letting the caulk set up, look for any cracks that may have appeared while it was drying. If you see any, apply a small amount of caulk to your fingertip, and smooth the silicone over the areas.

Even after performing the above steps, you may still have some condensation building up inside of your windows, eventually leading to a breakdown of the seals. If the problem does persist, you may want to contact a windows service to discuss your options for having new windows installed that are better designed for keeping the moisture out.
